Dana's Housekeeping Personnel Service

Frequently Asked Questions

Many of our customers have questions about our referral services. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions. Simply click on the question to see the answer. If you don't see your question, please call the Dana's Housekeeping Service near you. We are happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have.

• What is a Domestic Referral Agency?

A Domestic Referral Agency outsources housekeeping jobs to independent domestic workers/housekeepers who are registered and under contract with the referral agency. The housekeepers receive a 1099 at year end; the housekeepers are not employees of the referral agency. Depending on the needs of the customer, supplies and equipment are provided by either the customer or the worker. The housekeepers provide professional domestic services, as requested by the customer.

• Why should I use a Domestic Referral Agency rather than a maid service or employee-based house cleaning company?

Customers can engage housekeepers who will perform virtually any household task and work from their priority list, for an affordable cost. Housekeepers can access customers through the agency while enjoying the freedom to create their own schedule and the ability to increase their earnings.

How can this business model be so good for both customers and housekeepers?

A Domestic Referral Agency minimizes the customer’s costs while maximizing the worker’s income by outsourcing jobs to independent domestic workers, keeping the agency’s overhead low. Domestic Referral Agencies also reduce the Underground Economy, as these workers would be more likely to be working as “private” housekeepers– it’s a win-win-win!

• Why should I choose Dana’s?

Dana's is the largest, oldest and, we think, the most professional housekeeping referral agency in California. Over 5 million home cleanings have been performed by housekeepers referred by Dana’s, since 1976. The housekeepers we refer are not limited to the traditional housekeeping chores, but perform essentially any tasks you want completed.

  • Dana’s local staff is available during normal business hours to answer your questions; you will not get voice mail during normal business hours!
  • We match housekeepers and homeowners. We listen to each individual client’s needs and then make the appropriate match using the list of services offered by each housekeeper.
  • Your housekeeper works from your (not their) priority list. They use your cleaning supplies and equipment so you know what products are being used in your home (unless otherwise requested).
  • Guaranteed Service.
  • Guaranteed substitute. We automatically send a substitute housekeeper if your regular person is ill or has personal business.
• What day and time can I have a house cleaning service?

Dana’s can react to same/next day service or schedule as far into the future as you like. It is up to you! The majority of client’s request their house cleaning to be scheduled during the week between the hours of 7am and 6pm; however, housekeepers are available 7 days a week.

• How many maids come to clean my home?

At Dana’s, we match homeowners and housekeepers. In order to get the best home cleaning experience possible, we will refer one housekeeper for a one-on-one housekeeper relationship! Of course, we can refer multiple housekeepers for large jobs or just if your preference is having more housekeepers (and therefore have them less time) in your home. Your choice!

• What does general housekeeping include?

As cleaning is subjective and every client’s priorities are different, we encourage all client’s to fill out a priority list for their housekeeper!

In addition to cleaning your home, did you know the housekeepers will perform a variety tasks, such as:

  • Assisting at parties
  • Cleaning inside cupboards and appliances
  • Cleaning patio and garage
  • Ironing and Laundry
  • Meeting repair people or deliveries
  • Organizing Closets
  • Running Errands and Shopping
• How do I communicate with my housekeeper?

Your housekeeper will call you prior to your first service. To have the best experience possible, we encourage all clients to fill out a priority list for their housekeeper!

• What are your rates?

We can give you an idea of the pricing structure, however, the estimate will be given by local branch manager, once he/she understands the scope of the work. The majority of Dana’s locations have a 3 hour minimum job cost with a range of $69 - $92; additional hours are available at $17 - $20 per hour.

Discounted rates are available for:

  1. Clients who confirm regular service (weekly, biweekly, monthly). After your initial cleaning, you will receive a discount of $15 - $20 per service (depending on location). These prices are for one housekeeper, using your supplies and equipment. If you prefer the housekeeper(s) to provide supplies and equipment, please contact your local branch for a free quote.
  2. Members of the military (please contact your local office)
  3. Senior Citizens (please contact your local office)
• How does the housekeeper know what needs to be done?

Every clients needs are different, so your housekeeper will work from the priority list you create for them.

• Will someone need to stay with the housekeeper after they arrive?

This is entirely up to you. We recommend that once you have established a relationship with a regular housekeeper, that you decide together the best arrangement for your situation. You can make arrangements for the housekeeper to enter without your being present, or not. It is up to you.

• If I find a housekeeper that I really like, can I request them again? Or what if I am unhappy with a housekeeper?

Communication is key to making a good match! If you are pleased with the initial housekeeper referred to you, then at your option he or she can become your regular housekeeper. The most experienced housekeepers are quickly booked by regular clients. We suggest that you schedule repeat service based on your favorite housekeeper's schedule and availability. If you are not satisfied for any reason, at any time, we want to know so we can make things right.

• What if I just need cleanings done on an occasional basis?

Most of our clients schedule service on a regular recurring basis (weekly, biweekly and monthly), but housekeepers are also available for one time cleanings.

• How do I pay - do you accept credit cards?

We accept MasterCard, Visa, Discover and American Express for your convenience. Or, if you prefer you can pay your housekeeper cash or with a check at the time of your service. In accordance with the law, any client fees collected by Dana’s is deposited into a trust account until the housekeeper can be paid.

• What about tipping?

We leave that up to you. Tips are not required, but they are always appreciated!

• Do you require cancellation notice?

Please be considerate of your housekeeper. As Independent Housekeepers, their time is their money. If you must postpone or cancel a scheduled service, please notify Dana’s at least two (2) business days in advance. This will allow us the opportunity of finding your housekeeper other work.

If you are unable to give a two (2) business day notice (Mon-Fri), there will be a $25.00 charge.

• Am I subject to employer responsibilities?

Dana's is not the employer of the domestic worker it refers to you. The domestic worker may be your employee or an independent contractor depending on the relationship you have with him or her. If you direct and control the manner and means by which the domestic worker performs his or her work, you may have employer responsibilities, including employment taxes and workers compensation, under state and federal law. For additional information, contact your local Employment Development Department and the Internal Revenue Service.

• Are you bonded and insured? What if something is broken or if I believe something is missing from my home?

If you believe something is missing from your home, please discuss this with your family to confirm. Once you are convinced the item is missing, Dana’s management would first encourage you to notify your local police department.

Your valuables are protected against the unlikely possibility of theft. Even though Dana's is not responsible for theft and loss committed by its referred domestic workers, as an accommodation to our clients Dana's provides a Theft Protection Plan that pays up to $3,000 upon conviction per incident.

In regard to damage, referred housekeepers are independent and therefore responsible for damage. As with other workers in your home, your homeowner or renter’s insurance policy may provide you with coverage for theft or damage.

• I read somewhere that I can get a FREE house cleaning service; how does that work?

Free Service for ONE referral. Merely refer ONE client to Dana's. After they use Dana's twice within 6 weeks, you will receive a FREE half-day home clean - two clients and you will receive two cleans and on and on.
